Let’s talk laser.

You want less shaving. You also want to know how many appointments, what laser feels like, and what it costs. Here are five questions to ask before starting laser hair removal in South Austin.

I have bougie taste in laser equipment. There, I said it.

At Prickly Spa, our boutique laser hair removal spa in South Austin, we use the Lumenis LightSheer Quattro. We have both the 805 nm and 1060 nm handpieces, with ChillTip contact cooling. I wanted a laser I was excited to put in our treatment room, and this is it.

Here’s what’s behind the fancy name, and why I chose it for Prickly.

What is the Lumenis LightSheer Quattro?

The Quattro is a diode laser system designed for long-term hair reduction. Laser light is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in your hair. That energy becomes heat and damages the structures responsible for hair growth.

Skin contains melanin, too. The skill is in targeting the hair while protecting the skin around it. Equipment, wavelength, settings and your technician’s experience all matter.

Why do we have both 805 nm and 1060 nm handpieces?

These numbers describe the wavelength of the laser light. Our 805 nm and 1060 nm handpieces give us two options for treating different combinations of hair and skin.

The longer 1060 nm wavelength has less melanin absorption than 805 nm, helping reduce competing absorption in darker skin. Having that option matters when you’re treating a range of skin tones.

At Prickly Spa in South Austin, we try to keep you with the same laser hair removal technician as much as possible. By your third or fourth appointment, we want you walking in to someone who knows your skin, your progress and how you like to be treated.

There’s a practical reason for that. There’s also a very personal one, especially if you’re booking a Brazilian.

Is it better to see the same laser hair removal technician?

Seeing the same technician helps them follow how your hair is changing and how your skin responds over time. They’ve seen your earlier treatments firsthand, and they can ask you about the reaction afterward.

Did the redness settle quickly? Did anything feel different this time? How is the regrowth looking? Those answers help us plan your next treatment. Familiarity makes that conversation easier.

Should my laser settings be the same at every appointment?

Your previous settings are a starting point for assessment, not an instruction to copy. Your technician performs a fresh hair and skin analysis at every visit. We check your response to the last session, your progress, medications, recent tanning and any changes since we saw you.

I was 21 when I first got laser hair removal, and I was mesmerized by the results.

Persian and hairy, I felt like I’d discovered magic. I loved what laser did for me. What I didn’t love was how I was sold the treatment.

I was a college student, and I got pressured into buying a $4,000 package. I didn’t have $4,000. But I signed up anyway and went into debt for it. So yes, my laser ended up costing even more once interest joined the party. Love that for 21-year-old me. Lol.

Years later, when I found myself in the laser industry, I still remembered that sales pitch. When I opened Prickly Spa in South Austin, I knew exactly what I wanted to do differently.

Can you pay for laser hair removal one session at a time?

At Prickly, yes. You book your appointment and pay for that session. There’s no required package to buy before you can start.

I never want someone sitting in our spa doing mental math about a purchase they can’t afford while feeling pressured to say yes. Ask your questions. Look at the prices. Decide when you’re ready.

Why not sell a package if laser needs multiple sessions?

I understand why packages exist. A laser hair removal plan can involve 6 to 12 or more treatments, depending on your hair, area and progress. But needing several appointments doesn’t mean you need to pay for all of them on day one.
